Adaptive Receiver Control for Reliable High-Speed Underwater Wireless Optical Communication With Photomultiplier Tube Receiver

Photomultiplier tube (PMT) receiver is a promising solution for long-distance underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) due to its characteristics of high gain, low noise, and large area. However, the complex environment leads dynamic change received intensity impacts stability reliability UWOC system using PMT. In this work, bandwidth limitation performance degradation caused by PMT saturation experimentally observed characterized various gain. A low-cost, high-integrated, small-volume control relevant adaptive strategy are proposed improve dynamically adjusting power gain according detected signal. The experiment results show that range can be extended 68 dB (-63 dBm~5 dBm) 100 Mbit/s OOK modulation based system.
